Caring for your Spine
Water Therapy and The Spine

Water Therapy Exercise Devices

There are many exercise devices that can be used for water therapy, water exercise or for spine or extremity rehabilitation.  Available exercise aids include:

Buoyancy vests:  Buoyancy vests keep the head above water while allowing an individual to exercise in deep water.  Most therapy vests hold the upper torso at a forward angle of 5-20 degrees, similar to a jogging angle.  This creates added buoyancy and a traction effect beneficial to the spine.  It can be used to a jogging motion in the water.

Webbed gloves:  Webbed gloves provide resistance against the column of water during movement.  This is good for shoulder rehabilitation and for strengthening muscles of the upper arm and hand that may have been weakened by nerve damage arising from the neck.

Foot booties:  Foam foot booties provide added resistance to foot and leg muscles when used under water.  They can be used to help strengthen muscles of the leg and foot.  They can also be used as part of a gait rehabilitation or re-training program.  Resistive booties can be used to help strengthen muscles of the leg and foot that may have become weakened by nerve damage arising from the low back.

Foam dumbbells:  Foam dumbbells provide resistance under water.  They absorb water like a sponge that makes them heavier and bulkier under water.  They provide increased surface area that leads to increased resistance against the column of water surrounding the upper extremity.  They can be used to help strengthen the muscles of the shoulder, arm and hand.  They can be particularly effective at helping to strengthen upper extremity muscles that have become weakened by nerve damage in the neck.
